Favourite spots to SUP in Ottawa, ON

Stand up paddle boarding in the nation's capital

1) Lemieux Island

Lemieux Island is a well-known area for dogs to socialize and swim. From the parking area, a short walk brings you to an easy entry point to the water where you can explore various little islands and beautiful views of the city including the parliament buildings. The calmer water around the islands makes it easy for beginners; but if you are wanting to be a bit more adventurous, a short paddle into the open channels of the river can provide you with some good currents and rapids to play around in.

2) Dick Bell Park and the Nepean Sailing Club

Dick Bell Park offers free parking with various easy access points to the water and dogs are allowed on leash. We particularly love this spot for a beautiful sunset paddle with Britannia Beach in somewhat close proximity. This area is not always ideal for beginners as it can be quite busy and rather windy at times, but if you plan on going to catch a sunset, the water is often calmer in the late evening.

3) Chapman Mills Conservation Area

Chapman Mills Conservation Area parking can be found off of Prince of Wales, but is somewhat limited when busy. Dogs are permitted on leash. From the parking area, accessing the water is very easy. Once out on the water, this particular area provides you with beautiful landscape views where you get to see and paddle under the stunning architectural Vimy Bridge. The Rideau River offers mostly calm waters; but being somewhat narrow, boats passing by can have you testing your balance a bit if on a stand up paddle board.
